Überblick : Mirium Jones ist eine wunderschöne, unter Schizophrenie leidende Frau, die sich aufgrund der anhaltenden Affäre ihres Mannes mit einer Jüngeren immer öfter in ihre eigene Traumwelt zurückzieht. Um aus der Ehe auszubrechen, begibt sie sich alleine auf eine Reise nach Venedig. Als sie sich dort verloren und einsam in einer altertümlichen Basilika wiederfindet, begegnet sie dem Teufel, mit dem sie eine Vereinbarung trifft. Sie kehrt in die USA und zu ihrem Ehemann Gabriel zurück, mit dem sie die Stadt verlässt, um einen Neuanfang zu wagen. Abgeschieden von dem Rest der Gesellschaft wird Mirium jedoch schon bald von schrecklichen Visionen geplagt. Als dann auch noch Gabriel nach einer neuerlichen Attacke spurlos verschwindet, beginnt sie sich zu fragen, ob sie langsam den Verstand verliert... oder ist der Teufel zurückgekommen, um seinen Tribut einzufordern?
